Multiple Heavy Chain Classes and Light Chain Types on Surfaces of Cultured Human Lymphoid Cells

Abstract

MATURE B lymphocytes and plasma cells synthesise and secrete immunoglobulin antibodies restricted as to class, light chain type, allotype, idiotype, and specificity1 in accordance with the predictions of the clonal selection theory2. Membrane-associated immunoglobulin displayed on the surfaces of lymphocytes is also of a single class, light chain type and allotype3, 4, and is monospecific with respect to antibody combining sites5.
