In contrast to national projections, seroprevalence of HIV infection is increasing among pregnant women of North India, new research says1.
A study on over 3,500 pregnant women in a tertiary healthcare centre in northern India showed an increasing trend from 0.7% in 2003-2004 to 0.9% in 2005-2006. This prevalence rate is a cause for concern, the researchers say, since Delhi and its adjoining states are otherwise considered as 'low prevalence states'.
Very few studies are available from north India showing the current trend in HIV prevalence in the antenatal population and this study is an eye-opener.
