Different from other factors tested (in Supplementary Fig.8g,h) Fgf1 caused oligodendrocytes to elaborate myelin-like flat membrane sheaths, that can be immunostained for MBP (white/green) but largely fail to myelinate axons (labeled with Smi31, red).
