Registry study shows link between high testosterone and reduced CV risk

A prospective registry study involving 2,416 elderly (69–81 year-old) men has shown that high serum testosterone levels are linked with reduced risk of nonfatal and fatal cardiovascular (CV) events.

Participants were divided into quartiles on the basis of their serum testosterone levels being ≤340 ng/dl, 341–438 ng/dl, 439–549 ng/dl, or ≥550 ng/dl. At baseline, increased levels of testosterone were associated with increased levels of physical activity and decreased prevalence of CV risk factors, such as BMI, ApoB:ApoA1 ratio, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Compared with individuals in the lower two quartiles of serum testosterone, those in the highest quartile were around half as likely to have a history of CV disease.
