Genomic landscape of mCRC revealed

Metastatic colorectal cancers (mCRCs) have high levels of clinical heterogeneity; however, the contribution of genetic variations to this heterogeneity is not well characterized. Now, data from an extensive, prospectively designed clinical sequencing study provide insight into the genetic pathways towards colorectal tumorigenesis and tumour progression, and the spectrum of actionable mutations present within this group of malignancies.

Researchers conducted targeted sequencing of the genomes of 1,134 samples of mCRCs, obtained from a total of 1,099 patients, using the MSK-IMPACT assay. “This capture-based next-generation sequencing platform could detect mutations, copy-number alterations, and select rearrangements in >300 cancer genes (now 468), even in small amounts of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues,” first author Rona Yaeger explains.
