A novel role for leptin in mediating the increased blood pressure that is seen in individuals with obesity has been identified. The findings, published in Cell, stem from a collaboration between the laboratories of Michael Cowley (Monash University, Clayton, Australia) and Sadaf Farooqi (University of Cambridge, UK); other researchers from the USA and the UK were also involved.

Obesity is a known risk factor for the development of hypertension, but the mechanistic link between the two conditions is not well understood. “When I was an undergraduate student,” comments Cowley, “an argument was made that because the body of an individual with obesity is much bigger than the body of an individual without obesity, the heart of those with obesity had to work harder. However, some athletes such as rugby players have very large bodies yet do not have high blood pressure.”
