Statin potency is associated with risk of new-onset diabetes in patients with CVD

Patients treated with higher potency statins for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) have an increased risk of diabetes compared with patients treated with lower potency statins, according to a meta-analysis of eight population-based cohort studies.

“Existing clinical trials of statins were not based on real world use, were not specifically designed to assess diabetes endpoints [...], and were not restricted to secondary prevention of cardiovascular events,” write the authors of the study.
