Glycaemic response variation suggests value of personalized diets

New results demonstrate that the glycaemic index of food is not fixed, and postprandial glycaemic responses (PPGRs) vary from person to person. Integrating PPGR values with physical and behavioural variables now enables prediction of personalized diets to minimize PPGRs and their associated metabolic effects.

Hyperglycaemia is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the metabolic syndrome. Controlling blood glucose levels through dietary intake can have health benefits for the ever-increasing number of individuals with prediabetes and T2DM. Unfortunately, existing methods of predicting PPGRs do not take account of the complexity of real-life meals and the influence of associated behaviour patterns; furthermore, the methods are predicated on the notion that the PPGR is not affected by individual variation.
