The BTNL gene Skint1, which is expressed by thymic epithelial cells, has been shown previously to drive the thymic maturation of Vγ5+ dendritic epidermal T cells. This study shows that the related family members Btnl1 and Btnl6 in mice, and BTNL3 and BTNL8 in humans, have similar roles in the maturation of the gut IEL repertoire.
