Sun exposure and vitamin D linked to the risk of stroke

Low levels of sun exposure and low levels of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) are associated with an increased risk of stroke, according to two independent studies published in Annals of Neurology.

“Several epidemiological studies have shown an association between low plasma 25(OH)D levels and risk of ischaemic stroke,” says Peter Brøndum-Jacobsen, lead author of the first publication, “but in a much smaller setting compared to our population study.” The researchers, from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, analysed data on 10,170 individuals who were included in the Copenhagen City Heart Study.
