BAMBI is structurally similar to TGF-β type I transmembrane receptors but lacks the kinase domain, causing it to antagonize TGF-β signalling. Its role in immune cells was previously unknown. Having first established that the expression of BAMBI was only observed in CD4+ T cells once they were activated (at which point, TGF-β further enhanced BAMBI expression), the researchers analysed BAMBI-knockout (BAMBI-KO) mice to gain further insight into its function.
