Abstract
Racemic and (S)-propylene oxides were polymerized with a condensate of dibutyltin oxide and tributyl phosphate in the presence of a small amount of CH3OH or CD3OD, and end groups and irregular linkage in the polymers were analyzed by 1H and 2H NMR spectroscopy. Two types of methoxy group were found at the initiating end (left end) of the polymer chains, which formed through the α- and β-cleavages of the oxirane ring by the addition of methoxide anion. The terminating ends (right end) of all the polymer chains are secondary alcoholic structure. The contents of tail-to-tail linkage in the polymers were found to be only 0.5–1.5 units per chain. The results reveal that the addition of CH3O anion prefers the β-cleavage and the propagation proceeds mostly via the β-cleavage.
