Surface-grafted side-chain azobenzene liquid crystal (LC) polymers with a diblock architecture, synthesized by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) for in-plane photoalignment (case d in Figure 4). A flexible chain of poly(hexyl methacrylate) (PHMA) is introduced between PAz and the substrate. The figure below indicates the in-plane orientation order parameter (S) achieved by linearly polarized light (LPL) irradiation as a function of temperature during the irradiation procedure.
