BACKGROUND & AIM: Intracranial pressure B-waves result from low-frequency vasomotor changes, which appears in Doppler sonography as SV of CBFV (1-6 cycles/min). Loss of SV of CBFV might serve as an indicator of a compromised arteriolar vasomotor function (AVF). In order to prove this hypothesis we studied SV of cbfv in a prospective randomized trial in infants during halothane anesthesia, representing an example of compromised AVF or propofol anesthesia which does not affect AVF.

PATIENTS & METHODS: 19 healthy infants age <1y were studied during minor elective surgery. CBFV was assessed in middle cerebral art. with a transcranial Doppler instrument (DWL, Multi Dop X - Ispta: 1,5·5 mW/cm2) during premedication (midazolam) and halothane(1,5%) or propofol anesthesia. Data were analyzed by FFT of 5 min sequences. Assessment of gravity points of the resulting spectra allowed statistical analysis (Wilcoxon signed-rank test).
