Background: The Kwashiorkor syndrome is a form of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) characterized by generalized oedema, skin and hair changes, neurologic abnormalities and fatty liver. It has been postulated that the sudden onset is due to lipid peroxidation (LPO).

Subjects: 33 children aged 6 months to 4 years with protein-energy malnutrition (marasmus, oedematous marasmus and kwashiorkor) and 15 age-matched healthy local controls.
