Renal effects of anoxia and nephrotoxic drugs assessed by urinaryα-1-microglobulin (α1m) and N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAG) in premature infants † 839

Both neonatal anoxia (NA) and nephrotoxic durgs, such as aminoglycosides(AMG), may alter renal function in the newborn. This prospective, multicenter study aims to assess urinary α1m and NAG as discriminant biomarkers of renal dysfunction/damage due to NA or AMG in premature infants.

Sixty patients were divided into 4 groups. Thirty-seven(GA=34.7±1.8wks; BW=2028±436gr) were included in a control group. Four (GA=33±0.8wks; BW=1605±667gr) had been exposed to NA. Four (GA=32.5±1.2wks; BW=1541±386gr) had been treated with AMG (nethylmycine). Fifteen (GA=31.2±2.8wks; BW=1685±723gr) had been exposed to both NA and AMG.
