Second, animals were sacrificed 5 days after and the severity of brain injury was assessed by comparison of the weight of the injected cerebral hemisphere and that of contralateral one. The weight of the injected side was significantly reduced in a dose-response manner. Furthermore, the degree of the maximum DA induced by NMDA perfusion was highly correlated(r= 0.70, n=52, p<0.001) with the degree of the weight reduction of injected side of hemisphere. These data indicate that NMDA has significant influence on striatal monoamine metabolism in immature brain and that the degree of DA increase appears to be a useful quantitative indicator of brain injury.
