What's the Cost of Mechanical Ventilation of the Newborn in the US? 1139

Introduction: Though the provision of life-supporting therapy to adults has come under significant scrutiny in recent years, there has been significantly less attention to the national costs of life support in the neonatal population. We explored the incidence, outcome and hospital costs of newborns receiving mechanical ventilation (MV) in the US.

Methods: All hospitalizations involving MV of infants < 15 days old were extracted from the 1994 state discharge databases of six states(CA, IL, FL, NY, AZ, OR). The incidence of multiple hospitalizations with MV was determined through record linkage in two states. Resource use per episode(including multiple hospitalizations) was assessed by mean hospital length of stay (LOS) and cost (determined by HCFA cost-to-charge ratios).
