Previous studies have demonstrated that nonprotein-bound iron (NPBI) can augment oxygen free radical-induced changes in cerebral cortical tissue following cerebral hypoxia-ischemia (HI). Binding of NPBI through deferoxamine(DFO) may therefore improve outcome after HI, but the effects of DFO administration after HI on NPBI levels in cerebral cortical tissue are unknown.

We hypothesized that administration of DFO following HI decreased levels of NPBI in cerebral cortical tissue of newborn lambs.
