Background: Prior studies show that bacterial stool culture (BSC) is a low yield test in adults with nosocomial diarrhea, typically defined as diarrhea with onset after the third hospital day.

Question: Should BSC be part of the initial evaluation of children with symptoms of nosocomial gastrointestinal (GI) infection? To answer this question we performed a retrospective record review to determine the yield of BSC in children after the third hospital day (day 3).
