Background: Cesarean section delivery is considered a higher risk to the newborn infant than a vaginal delivery. Consequently, in our institution, a minimum of a three person team (neonatologist, respiratory therapist, nurse) is called to all cesarean section deliveries, while one nurse, competent in neonatal resuscitation, is called to term, uncomplicated vaginal deliveries.

Objective: To compare the risk of the mode of delivery (vaginal versus cesarean section) to the newborn infant, based on 1 and 5 minute Apgar scores, the need for resuscitation (intubation and/or bag and mask ventilation), and admission to the NICU.
