Objective: To evaluate red blood cell fragility in relation to gestational age, maternal smoking, medication, and type of anesthesia.

Background: Preterm infants produce more bilirubin than term infants, as measured by end tidal carbon monoxide. Also, an infant whose mother was given pitocin or had an epidural anesthesia, is more likely to have higher bilirubin level. We did this study to assess whether maternal medication, anesthesia, smoking, or gestational age effected red blood cell fragility.
