Brazil has become a route for the drugs of South-American countries to reach the United States and Europe, thus increasing the consumption of illegal drugs by it's population, and also affecting newborn infants. Studies to increase knowledge on the immediate and late fetal and neonatal effects of drug use by pregnant women have become mandatory.

Mothers that mentioned using licit and illicit drugs on the initial anamnesis during admission to the maternity of Santa Casa de Sao Paulo Hospital, were evaluated from march to november 1997.
