Background: Current Group B Streptococcus (GBS) Practice Guidelines expose a large number of mothers (fetuses/neonates) to antibiotics unnecessarily. Accurate knowledge about maternal GBS colonization status at the time of delivery is important, as mothers (fetuses) negative for GBS could be exluded from prophylaxis and exposure to antibiotics.

Objective: To review studies pertaining to the rapid detection of GBS using antigen detection methods: latex particle agglutination (LPA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
