Background: Rates of IVH differ among NICUs for very premature infants (<31 weeks). This finding might result from differences in antecedant risk (gestational age [GA], birth weight [BW], male gender, antenatal corticosteroids [ACS], cesarean delivery [C/S]). Alternatively it might result from specific medical practices that differ by NICU.

Methods: 1276 first admissions <31 weeks to 6 regional perinatal centers were prospectively abstracted for demographic and medical risk factors, and the Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology (SNAP) from 10/94-6/96. Papile grades 3 and 4 IVH were classified as severe. We analyzed survivors only. Factors with univariate association were entered in two logistic regressions, stratified by GA.
