Purpose: To investigate the efficacy of free radical scavenging using deferoxamine (DFO) in seven day old mice after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

Background: Superoxide dismutase converts superoxide anion to hydrogen peroxide which is catalyzed to water under normal conditions. After hypoxia-ischemia, hydrogen peroxide may contribute to damage either directly or through conversion to hydroxyl radical in the presence of iron (the Fenton reaction). By chelating iron in the brain, deferoxamine may slow the fenton reaction and thus reduce damage.
