EXTREMELY PREMATURE AND EXTREMELY LOW BIRTHWEIGHT INFANTS-A NATION-WIDE COHORT STUDY

The results of a prospective study including all extremely premature (GA< 28 weeks) or extremely low birth weight (BW <1000 gram) infants born in Denmark in 1994 and 1995 are presented. The cohort comprises 387 infants treated in 18 departments. The surviving 255 children (66%) were seen at 5, 12 and 24 months (corrected age) follow-up investigations. The children were nursed under "minimal handling" circumstances, preferentially using NCPAP instead of mechanical ventilation.
