Capnography for Polygraphic Recordings in Pediatric Patients: Less Artifacts and Additional Information

Background: The observation of obstructive apneas in infants who later died of SIDS has led to the routine registration of airflow through the upper airways in pediatric polygraphic recordings. For this purpose usually nasal thermistors are placed at the nostrils. However, artifacts can cause false-positive obstructive apnea patterns which frequently cannot be clearly rejected by visual control of the recordings. Recently, laryngeal microphones have been used to overcome this problem. However, the disadvantage of an additional device prompted us to evaluate capnography as an alternative method for the detection of obstructive apneas.
