Markers of Acute Lung Inflammation Are Increased in Infants with Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension Independent of Inhaled Nitric Oxide Therapy

Inhaled nitric oxide (INO) has been shown to decrease pulmonary vascular resistance in infants with pulmonary hypertension (PPHn). However, due to the reactive nature of nitric oxide and its metabolites, concern exists about the toxicity and safety of this therapeutic modality in infants with severe cardiopulmonary failure. We wanted to determine whether sustained exposure to inhaled nitric oxide would increase acute lung inflammation in infants with PPHn.
