Non-Protein-Bound Iron and Free Radical Damage in Fetuses with Rhesus Hemolytic Disease; Influence of Intra-Uterine Transfusions

Introduction. Repeated intra-uterine transfusions (IUT) could lead to iron overload and consequently to free radical damage in babies with rhesus hemolytic disease (RHD) (Berger et al, Lancet 1990; 335:933). In this study we therefore measured fetal non-protein-bound iron (NPBI) levels, anti-oxidant capacity, and vitamin C and lipid (per)oxidation products before each required intravascular IUT and at birth.
