Traditionally, maternal history as well as clinical signs in the newborn have been used in risk assessment for neonatal sepsis. Socioeconomic status and ethnicity may also affect risk for sepsis, but these factors are not well studied. We compared the clinical risk factors of infants evaluated for sepsis in an inner city county hospital (n=274), to those of a health maintenance organization (HMO, n=2785) in order to determine whether differences in socioeconomic status affect risk for sepsis in the newborn.
