BACKGROUND: Enteral feedings for preterm very low birth weight infants (VLBW; BW< 1500) infants are a important component of their medical care, providing essential calories and promoting maturation of the gut. As the benefits of early enteral feedings (within several postnatal days) have been recognized, physicians attitudes in our NICU have changed towards providing enteral feeding earlier after birth with more rapid feeding advancement. The purpose of this study was to analyze whether the intent to alter enteral feeding practice has resulted in increased enteral nutrition during the first month of life for VLBW infants in our NICU's.
