Introduction: calcium regulates surfactant secretion and activity. The interconversion of tubular myelin with the monolayer seems to be highly dependent on calcium ion. This mechanism depends on surfactant apoproteins (SP-B and SP-C) that configure, in the presence of calcium, the bipolar monolayer of phospholipid molecules to achieve optimal surfactant performance.
