Effects of Variations in Carbohydrate (CHO) Intake on Postprandial Gas Exchange, and Respiratory Frequency of Low Birth Weight (LBW) Infants

Introduction: According to the stoichiometry of energy substrate oxidation, combustion of CHO produces more CO₂ per kcal of energy transformed than combustion of fat. One implication of this fact is that CO₂ dependent physiological variables such as carbon dioxide production (VCO₂), respiratory quotient (RQ), and respiratory frequency (f) will vary with the quality and quantity of substrate being oxidized. Also, it is known that substrate oxidation rates vary with time after feeding (diet-induced thermogenesis, DIT). Thus, we hypothesized that measurements of VCO₂, RQ, and f, vary not only with the quality and quantity of gross energy intake but also with the time after feeding.
