Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) has been recognized as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in adults with ESRD. The prevalence of LVH in children on chronic dialysis is not well established. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and severity of LVH among children and young adults on chronic hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD), and to identify independent predictors of LVH. Sixty-five patients, aged 2-22 years, on chronic dialysis for at least 4 months between 01/91 and 11/98, were studied for evidence of LVH using echocardiography. LV mass index, (LV mass divided by patient height (m) raised to the power of 2.7), was calculated to assess LV mass. Concentric LHV, the geometric pattern which is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease in adults, was defined as both LV mass index and relative wall thickness (RWT) greater than 95th %ile.
