Like Howland, Bob Haggerty, with enthusiasm, courage, curiosity, warmth, and scholarship, has advanced the boundaries of pediatrics in preparing today's pediatricians for tomorrow's challenges. Bob Haggerty has fulfilled this role as clinician, teacher, investigator, and advocate with insights and intellect matched by his gentle and gentlemanly style. Bob's career has successfully linked the academic, practice, foundation, and government worlds. Bob has built bridges from his teachers' pediatricians Janeway and Garland to his students in Boston, Rochester, New York, this country, and the world.

Bob grew up with many interests including fishing, stamp collecting (a passion he shared with his father), baseball, and music. Summers were spent in the Adirondacks. These were times of close friends and lifetime friendships. Bob's high school baseball career as a catcher reached its high point when Bob played on the Abner Doubleday Hall of Fame Field in Cooperstown. His life-long passion for the New York Yankees took root in 1937 when his Dad took him to Yankee Stadium. Although Bob's hero was Lou Gehrig, little did he know that he would become the Joe DiMaggio of general pediatrics.
