Respiration Rate and Filling Volume during Partial Liquid Ventilation (PLV)

Aims: On the basis of animal experiment PLV might come up as alternative artificial ventilation for surfactant deficiency due to prematurity. We were interested in the effect of different filling volumes of PFC (10 vs. 30 ml/kg) on gas exchange and lung mechanics and the impact of different ventilation frequencies thereon. Therefore we measured paO2, paCO2 and lung compliance before and after bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), as well as during sequential PLV (60, 120 min) combined with increased and reduced ventilation rate (VF 60/40/20/40).
