Objective: To study the developmental changes in erythrocyte Na,K-ATPase α₁, α₂, α₃, β₁ and β₂ subunit isoform abundance and to relate these changes to the ATPase activity and cation-pump function of the Na,K-ATPase enzyme in preterm and term neonates. The α subunits possess the ATPase activity and perform the cation-pump function. However, the latter is not realized without the β subunits.
