Effect of Gram Negative and Gram Positive Bacteria on Cytokine Expression by Cultured Intestinal Epithelial Cells: Possible Implications in Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Inflammatory mediators have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Necrotizing Enterocolitis. We have previously described that adherent Gram negative (E. coli) strains could produce NEC-like injury in a weanling rabbit ileal loop model. It was also shown that specific Gram (+) bacteria (Enterococcus faecium) with the ability to block E. coli adherence in vitro, were able to block in vivo disease. In this study, we examined the effect of E. coli and E. faecium on the expression of cytokines (mRNA and protein) in T-84 and Caco-2 cells.
