Introduction: Human milk is rich in glycoconjugates, i.e., complex carbohydrate-containing molecules, many of which inhibit common pathogens of children. These milk glycoconjugates inhibit binding by the pathogen to their host cell surface receptors, often by virtue of their resemblance to these host cell glycoconjugates. Sulfatides are host cell receptors to several common pathogens.
