Necrotizing Enterocolitis is believed to have a multifactorial etiology. Ischemia, bacteria and oral feeding have been linked to this disease process. We have previously shown that adherent Gram (-) bacteria (E. coli) can produce NEC-like injury in weanling rabbit ileal loops, that can be blocked by specific Gram (+) organisms (E. faecium). Inflammatory mediators have also been linked to pathogenesis of gut injury in animal models of NEC. While elevated levels of different cytokines have been reported in the blood and tissue samples of babies with NEC, the exact insult(s) triggering and maintaining such a response have not been defined. In this study, we wanted to evaluate the ability of our previously used bacterial strains in evoking cytokine response in human cord blood.
