Abstract
Background and aims: The current NAN formula has an amino acid composition close to that of human breast milk. The objective of the metaanalysis was to evaluate growth of infants fed NAN with respect to WHO growth standard.
Methods: Five studies were included in the metaanalysis, over all 208 infants. Population under investigation was healthy term born infants fed with NAN formula. The studies were conducted in Australia, France and Italy. Main outcomes were z-score at 4 months of age. The American Academy of pediatrics is recommending 3 g/days as a clinically relevant treatment difference for weight gain. 3g/ day corresponds to 0.5 z-scores at 4 months. The presented statistics is the random effect total and the 95% confidence interval which can interpret as a mean over all studies considering the heterogeneity of the contributing studies.
Results: The random effect total in weight, length, head circumference, BMI for age z-scores at 4 months was -0.11, [-0.29, 0.08], 0.13, [-0.13, 0.40], 0.29, [0.04, 0.54], -0.24, [-0.57, 0.10], respectively. This is within a boundary of ± 0.5 z-scores for weight and length, slightly above for head circumference and below for BMI.
Conclusion: Growth of infants fed with NAN is in good agreement with the WHO growth standard.
