Demonstration of EMT by tracing urethral seam cells with transmission electron microscope. (a) Mesenchymal cells were distinguished morphologically by their shape and by well-developed pseudopodia and filopodia (arrow). The epithelial island is the remnant of the disappearing urethral seam. The epithelial cells in the island were joined by desmosomes, one of which (square inset) is enlarged in (b) (asterisk). Note the appearance of filopodia (arrowhead) of the epithelial cells. (b) Inset in (a) shows a magnified view of desmosome (asterisk).
