a Liver tissue samples were obtained 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h after MCAO. The total iron content was measured using an iron assay kit. The results are presented as the means ± SEMs (n = 4). Liver tissue sections were prepared from the sham control (b, c) and MCAO groups (d–g) at 12 and 24 h after MCAO and stained with Perls’ Prussian blue and nuclear fast red (a nuclear counterstain). Prussian blue-positive cells are indicated by arrows. Representative images from three MCAO groups are shown.
