Insulin signaling in the liver of subjects with normal liver and NAFLD. The expression of insulin receptor substrates-2 (IRS-2) is decreased, while the expression of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) and glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) are increased in patients with NAFLD. In contrast, the expression of IRS-1 is unaltered and the expression of fatty acid synthase (FAS) is increased in patients with NAFLD
