Confluent necrosis. The principle hallmark of severe necroinflammatory activity is confluent necrosis which may be perivenular (a), bridging between portal tracts and/or between central veins and portal tracts (b), or so widespread there are regions of parenchymal collapse (c); note that the schematic is drawn to same scale as a and b, but structures have collapsed together as hepatic parenchyma is destroyed
