When my son James was four, I took him to dinner at a Chinese restaurant with his sister. At the end of the meal, James opened his fortune cookie and read the fortune aloud: “You will do well in business.”

I knew James was recognizing words, but this was my first confirmation that he had mastered reading sentences.
