Moving neonatal nephrology care and research forward: proceedings from the First International Neonatal Nephrology Symposium

The Inaugural International Neonatal Nephrology Symposium (INNS) was held in Birmingham, Alabama from September 10–15, 2024. This event brought together clinicians, researchers, and patient advocates from across the world to share research and innovative ideas in the field of neonatal nephrology. The program showcased the remarkable advances over the past decade in neonatal kidney care, a critical area that affects the tiniest patients and their families. With an audience that represented 10 countries, the event was a hub for collaboration, learning, and the exchange of new ideas aimed at improving the care and treatment of neonates with kidney conditions.

Two important activities occurred prior to the formal meeting. First, the Neonatal and Infant Course for Kidney Support (NICKS) provided more than 50 participants the opportunity to learn about caring for neonates on kidney support therapy through didactics, skills, and simulations. Second, the Research Incubator in Neonatal Kidney Disease (RINK) enabled over 40 collaborators opportunities to discuss, evaluate, and collaborate to perform research on neonatal kidney disease. The RINK was hosted by the Neonatal Kidney Collaborative (NKC) and was sponsored by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Five awards were granted to enable fellows in neonatology or nephrology to participate.
