From: Signal-induced PARP1-Erk synergism mediates IEG expression

The relative expression rates of the IEGs c-fos, zif268 and arc were measured by RT-PCR at the indicated time intervals after the indicated electrical stimulation (1 s, 3 repeats) of cultured brain cortical neurons with three different frequencies (100 Hz, 10 Hz or 1 Hz). Enhanced expression rates of these genes were measured only in response to high-frequency stimulation (100 Hz; black line), which induces synaptic potentiation. The expression of these genes was prevented in stimulated neurons treated with the PARP inhibitors PJ-34 and Tiq-A (gray lines) (from ref. 20)
