Milestone events in the study of mitochondrial metabolism in cancer. From the Warburg effect (1920s) to recent innovations such as spatial mitochondrial network mapping (2023) and single-cell mtDNA sequencing (2024), this timeline traces key discoveries in mitochondrial cancer research. Major breakthroughs include investigations of mitochondrial structural anomalies, tumor-suppressive metabolic enzymes, apoptosis regulation, and multi-omics integration. These findings have deepened our understanding of the roles of mitochondria in cancer metabolism, heterogeneity, and therapeutic targeting. SCI-LITE single-cell mitochondrial DNA lineage tracing and editing, mtDNA mitochondrial DNA, TCA cycle tricarboxylic acid cycle, BCL B-cell lymphoma 2.
